Club career

Riffo began in the youth ranks of Colo-Colo, making his professional debut in 2001 against Unión San Felipe. Although Riffo was born with a club foot,[1] Riffo has made over 150 caps with Colo Colo, has captained the team several times, has won seven national championships, and has participated in several different international competitions with Colo-Colo. His club foot has prevented from Riffo being transferred several times because he does not pass the team physical. In 2009, Riffo suffered several injuries and only capped 19 times for Colo-Colo. Riffo, among others, was one of the main players which caused former Colo-Colo coach Marcelo Barticciotto to resign from the team in early 2009.[2] Barticiotto claimed Riffo and others were very undisciplined and did not prioritize football over other things such as smoking and drinking. Barticciotto kept Riffo out of team for several key matches, which caused turmoil between the club fans and players.[3] After Barticciotto quit Colo-Colo, fans invaded the practice pitch to confront their own players for causing the resignation. The fans specifically went against Riffo, Rodrigo Meléndez, Gonzalo Jara, and Arturo Sanhueza.[4] However the relationship between Riffo and the fans has since been mended.

International career

He also has represented the Chilean national team on several occasions. He played in one game in the Copa América 2007 versus Brazil in which he committed a penalty. Later in the match Riffo was injured for the tournament. Riffo played in the first four games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification for Chile. Riffo started the four games receiving a yellow card against Argentina. However he was not recalled after the fourth match for the rest of the qualification process.[5]
